Abstract | Nurses, midwives and students are legally responsible for their actions. This article discusses the legal standard of care in relation to nursing and midwifery practice and the NMC Code. It explains how the courts determine whether a nurse has met their duty of care. The article discusses levels of competency. It explains why nurses need to develop their organisational knowing regardless of their level within the organisation. Workplace incivility is discussed and how this impacts upon nurses and safe patient care. The article aims to help readers identify personal and organisational threats to safe working and patient care. This is the accepted version of the manuscript. |
