Abstract

One of the main features of construction activity which is of direct potential benefit to developing countries is its employment generation potential. For a country to take advantage of this potential, it should: make appropriate choices of construction technologies; and develop the necessary skills.

In Ghana, youth unemployment is a critical problem.
The paper considers the options for harnessing the job-creation capabilities of construction to address some of the present realities of Ghana's urban development challenges. It addresses the following questions: what is the employment situation in the construction industry in Ghana? What is the skills development situation? How popular is construction as career in Ghana? What initiatives are underway to develop such skills? What else needs to be done?
