Abstract

The Foundation Paediatric Pharmacy Workbook has been developed as a national resource by the Neonatal and Paediatric Pharmacists Group (NPPG) to support paediatric pharmacy practice throughout the UK. The aim of this workbook is to support the work of trainee/junior pharmacists and enable the development of key foundation skills in paediatric pharmacy. This resource will help to identify individual learning needs and enable application to everyday practice. A key aspect of this programme is to undertake patient case-reviews and discuss outcomes with a senior paediatric pharmacist.

The main objectives of this workbook are to:
• Have an understanding of age appropriate formulations for safe administration to children.
• Understand the pharmacokinetics and dynamics of children and apply this knowledge to clinical practice.
• Know where to access paediatric information sources.
• Understand the issues with the use of unlicensed and off-label use drugs in children.
• Be aware of best practice in dealing with the most common paediatric clinical problems: from general care to more specialised care.

Key areas covered during the placement include:
• Common conditions in paediatrics
• Paediatric population pharmacokinetics.
• Paediatric formulations
• Introduction to Neonatal Unit (NNU) and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) (in placement Trusts where available)

The learning outcomes detailed in the Workbook are intended to provide a clear and unambiguous framework for developing your paediatric skills. They have been formulated using Bloom’s taxonomy and mapped against the Neonatal and Paediatric Care Expert Professional Practice Curriculum (produced jointly by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the Neonatal & Paediatric Pharmacists Group to support the development of advanced practice). These learning outcomes will enable many of the criteria for Advanced Stage I to be met.
