Abstract

The key of realising improved collaboration amongst engineering disciplines which are involved in large projects is integration of the complex information structures that are generated and exchanged during the life-cycle of a project. Object-orientation has emerged as an appropriate approach in handing complexity which is inherent in many engineering domains. This research adopts an object-oriented approach in modelling engineering data on a conceptual level, together with mechanisms for effective information sharing. State-of-the-art tools and processes were utilised for the implementation of a collaborative environment for the construction industry where data are maintained as objects and can be re-used and enhanced by participating disciplines. This integrated environment enables _ efficient inter-disciplinary communication which was lacking previously due to the inadequacy of conventional methods to tackle complexity, therefore resulting in a potentially more competitive and effective construction industry.
