Abstract | The key of realising improved collaboration amongst engineering disciplines which are involved in large projects is integration of the complex information structures that are generated and exchanged during the life-cycle of a project. Object-orientation has emerged as an appropriate approach in handing complexity which is inherent in many engineering domains. This research adopts an object-oriented approach in modelling engineering data on a conceptual level, together with mechanisms for effective information sharing. State-of-the-art tools and processes were utilised for the implementation of a collaborative environment for the construction industry where data are maintained as objects and can be re-used and enhanced by participating disciplines. This integrated environment enables _ efficient inter-disciplinary communication which was lacking previously due to the inadequacy of conventional methods to tackle complexity, therefore resulting in a potentially more competitive and effective construction industry. |
