Abstract

This study considers the role of the non-specialist primary class teacher in providing music education for the children in her/his care.
The study first explores what that role might be by examining different authorities on music and music education, both within education and in the wider field of music. Collection of data took place through interview, questionnaire and observation as well as through secondary sources such as newspaper articles, consultation documents and conferences over a three year period and although a small sample the analysis suggested that there were many influences upon the role of the teacher in school.
The influences to be considered included teacher education, the media, the availability of classroom instruments and a teacher in charge of music, Local Education Authorities, books on music and education as well as individuals' views - such as musicians and headteachers. The influence of the teacher's confidence is also explored as a strong influence on her/his role in the classroom as well as the use of specialist language.
The examination of all these factors suggests that influences on the role are so strong that there is a need for in depth teacher education so that teachers are able to meet the demands of the National Cunri cutum. There is also a responsibility on the part of individuals, Local Education Authorities and National Government to facilitate this, as well as being aware of the needs of the non-specialist primary class teacher in order to provide a music curriculum.
