Abstract

This thesis examines alternatives with a view to increase the capacity of urban road junction in general and A24/A205 junction in Clapham in particular. Data were analysed with relation to various parameters such as saturation flow, capacity. RFC ratio, queues and delays. Traffic signal management schemes and physical alterations to the existing road system were chosen as short term and long term solutions. These hypothetical schemes were tested using OSCADY and ARCADY 2 computer programs. A combination of schemes (increasing number of lanes and early cut-off, traffic signal at roundabout) was also examined. In examining ways of improving the capacity of the existing junction (A24/A205) special attention was paid to land use, safety and cost.
