Abstract

A systematic investigation of the causes. and effects of the window of a surface barrier detector is described. The effect of the surface treatment is shown to be Significant in deter mining the resulting window thickness; and the influence of the magnitude of the electric field within the depletion region is demonstrated. An explanation for the origin of this effect is proposed, differing from previous models by including all the possible charge collection and loss modes. The predictions of this theory are compared with window thickness measurements, and also with plasma time measurements made independently.
