Abstract

The thesis surveys the basic requirements and properties of insulating materials with particular attention to the mechanisms of breakdown of gases and solids. Investigations of pre-breakdown discharges in gases between uniform field electrodes are reported in Section V and a preliminary study of degradation and breakdown of polymer film, when exposed to internal discharges, in Section VI.
