Abstract | Urbanism is the study of how inhabitants of urban spaces interact with the built environment which has affected how various cities and urban environments are being transformed based on the metamorphosis that takes place daily. This has resulted in various urbanism theories which have developed, evolved and transformed from the nineteen century till date. Urbanism as a theory and a way of life is clearly defined as the study of cities within its geographic, economic, political, social and cultural environs which generates an imprint on the built environment. Looking at this definition, the combination of the social, economic and environmental dimension has given birth to sustainable urbanism which is a recent movement used in developing urban environments. Sustainable urbanism is both the study of cities and the practices to build them, which focuses on promoting their long term viability by reducing consumption, waste and harmful impacts on people and place while enhancing the overall well-being of both people and place. |
